Hello all.
This morning started with Juli feeling very unwell, a flu bug hitting her hard and keeping her bed-bound. Though it’s always tough to see a loved one down, I felt a deep sense of responsibility and gratitude for the opportunity to step up and help. I began by tackling the morning routine—tidying up the kitchen, moving dry clothes upstairs, emptying the bin, loading the dishwasher (especially after the kids' late-night snacking), prepping my lunch, feeding the dog, and finally making breakfast for both Fearne and myself. It’s usually something Juli helps with, but today, it was all on me, and I was grateful for the chance to give her the rest she needed.
After getting Fearne ready for school, I called in to work to let them know I’d be a little late. I had to make a quick run to Tesco to get medicine for Juli. I’m thankful for modern conveniences like nearby stores and medicine that can help ease discomfort. Cold and flu tablets, Lemsip, and chicken soup were the perfect care package to help Juli through the day.
Returning home, I prepared porridge, a Lemsip to soothe her throat, and plenty of water to keep her hydrated. I set it all up on a tray and brought it to her in bed, grateful that I could provide her with some comfort and ensure she could rest. I left for work, albeit a little later than usual, and though I forgot my own lunch in the process, it gave me an excuse to indulge in a delicious pork pie from the local butcher. Sometimes, little inconveniences lead to unexpected joys.
At work, the first challenge was a long-standing issue in the office—a persistent smell coming from the children’s toilets. I’m so grateful for the expertise of the drain inspectors who identified the source: an old external drain under the office with a degraded seal. A quick application of sealant, and we can now enjoy a fresh-smelling work environment. It’s funny how something so small can make such a big difference.
The rest of the day was a mix of tasks. I placed an order for new computers and spent time repurposing an old laptop. It’s amazing how technology evolves so quickly—what was once a kit used for recording classroom lessons had become obsolete. I took the old laptop, converted it to Chrome OS, and connected it to a previously unused TV screen in the main corridor. Now, that screen will finally serve a purpose, displaying presentations to brighten up the hallway. I’m excited to see how the staff and students respond.
Throughout the day, I kept checking in on Juli. She still wasn’t feeling great, but I hoped my care would help her recover. When I got home later in the evening, I was surprised to find that instead of resting, Juli had been out running errands and visiting people. My heart sank a little—she needed to rest! Tomorrow, I’ll make sure she truly takes it easy.
After picking up our weekly grocery order from Tesco, I headed out to my monthly Referee’s Association meeting. I’m grateful for the camaraderie and the opportunity to engage with other referees, discussing key match decisions and sharing insights from recent games. It’s always a great way to keep learning and improving.
By the time I returned home, it was late, but I still had some tasks to finish. I cleaned up the living room, dealt with emails, tidied the kitchen, and took a shower. Though the day was long, I’m grateful for the small victories and the chance to care for those around me. As I write this at 1:15 AM, I’m ready to get some rest and start fresh tomorrow.
Every day brings challenges, but it’s how we rise to meet them that matters. Grateful for the opportunity to give, to work, and to care.
