Why I Wrote Keep Building – The Story Behind One of The Luminaries' Most Hopeful Songs

There are some songs that are written to celebrate success.

Then there are songs that are written for the journey.

Keep Building falls firmly into the second category.

When I began writing this song for The Luminaries, I wasn't thinking about reaching the finish line. I was thinking about all those moments in between - the times when you're working hard, wondering if you're making any progress at all, and questioning whether your dream is really worth pursuing.

I think we've all experienced those moments.

Success Isn't the Point

One of the biggest lessons I've learned over the years is that success isn't usually one dramatic moment. It's the result of hundreds, sometimes thousands, of small decisions made consistently over time.

One conversation.

One idea.

One page written.

One website built.

One line of code.

One sketch.

One song.

Looking back, almost everything I've created has happened because I simply kept showing up, even when progress felt painfully slow.

That became the heart of Keep Building.

The song isn't about reaching the summit.

It's about continuing the climb.

Why I Created This Song

As I've worked on The Legend of Skippy, I've realised that creativity isn't always glamorous.

There are days when ideas flow effortlessly, and there are days when nothing seems to work.

There are projects that take weeks.

Others take years.

Sometimes it feels like you're laying bricks without ever seeing the castle.

That's exactly why one of my favourite lines in the song became:

"Every castle starts as a single stone laid."

It's a simple reminder that every great achievement begins with something small.

Nobody sees the first brick.

Everybody notices the finished castle.

Creating the Song with The Luminaries

Within The Legend of Skippy, I see each creative medium as its own universe.

Books tell one story.

Games tell another.

Animation tells another.

Music became another universe entirely.

That's where The Luminaries were born.

Rather than simply writing songs, I wanted to create a band whose music would encourage people to believe in themselves, to ask questions, and to keep moving forward when life became difficult.

For Keep Building, I imagined Yuna beginning the song quietly and thoughtfully before the rest of the band gradually joined her, transforming a personal reflection into an uplifting anthem.

That progression mirrors the message itself.

Sometimes hope begins with one quiet voice.

Eventually, others join in.

Learning New Skills Along the Way

Creating The Luminaries has challenged me in ways I never expected.

I've written the songs.

Designed the characters.

Created artwork.

Produced lyric videos.

Built websites.

Learned new software.

Started releasing music on streaming platforms.

Managed social media.

Produced promotional videos.

Every step has required me to learn something new.

Ironically, the process of creating Keep Building became an example of the song's message.

There were moments when I questioned whether I could really make it happen.

But every small improvement built upon the last.

Every lesson became another brick.

More Than Just Music

Although Keep Building is part of an album, I don't really see it as just another song.

I hope it becomes something people return to when life feels difficult.

When someone is studying for exams.

Starting a business.

Recovering from failure.

Learning a new skill.

Writing a book.

Or simply trying to become a better version of themselves.

Sometimes we don't need someone to tell us we'll succeed.

We just need someone to remind us to keep going.

What I Learned

If creating The Luminaries has taught me anything, it's that creativity grows through consistency rather than perfection.

Waiting until everything feels ready usually means never starting at all.

The better approach is simply to begin.

Improve.

Learn.

Adjust.

Repeat.

One brick at a time.

Looking Ahead

This is only the beginning for The Luminaries.

I'm continuing to release songs, lyric videos, and music videos while building an audience around the band's message of hope, curiosity and human connection.

One day, I'd love these demo recordings to be performed by real singers, allowing The Luminaries to become a living band with its own identity and legacy.

Until then, I'll keep writing.

Keep learning.

And, fittingly...

Keep building.
